Google Goes Domain Shopping to Introduce its gLTDs

With the bidding for generic Top Level Domains or gLTDs ending on May-30, Google has already submitted applications to expand its reach with a clear objective to target specific sectors of the internet domain space.

Google has embarked on a 4-pronged strategy that firstly includes taking full advantage of its core trademark by applying for the .google TLD. The next move was to promote vital business applications such as .docs while the third was to promote and expand YouTube with the .youtube domain name in a bid to reach out further as well as create specific genres. The fourth strategy was to step into the future with the application of .lol that Google perceives has an innovative and interesting future.

Google hopes to work together with ICANN accredited registrars in a bid to offer a secure and rights protected internet experience for website owners, administrators, and browsers. ICANN charges $185,000 for each new domain name and in addition to using these domains and applications for their own expansion Google will certainly be looking at registering gLTD names with an eye to sell them to third parties.

ICANN has received over 1900 applications for new TLDs and will display the list of applicants and domains on June-13. Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist, Vint Cerf states that they are still in the exploration stage of discovering the potential offered by these new TLDs and is hopeful that users will find diverse options in cyberspace.

Google has not divulged the amount of domain names that it has applied for, although they will certainly be related to their own current and possible, future products. Well, the fruits of Google’s massive investment will definitely be revealed in a few days and Google might just be able to expand its brand name across the globe with the acquisition of key gLTDs.
