Utilize DNS CNAME Records Option To Verify your Domain Ownership

In case you are unable to make DNS TXT records for your own domains then you can now utilize the DNS CNAME Records option to verify your domain ownership. This will anyway be necessary before you utilize Google Apps or Webmaster Tools or other Google services.

You can validate ownership of your domain by typing in the desired domain name below the “Add a Site” option in the Verification Home Page or in Webmaster Tools. Once you have typed the domain name then you will need to specify your domain name provider administering your DNS records from the displayed list. In case the name is not present in that list then you should choose the “Other” option.

You will now be able to view a message asking you to add the CNAME record along with a link or will receive help in setting up a CNAME record depending on your earlier inputs. You can add the desired CNAME record to the DNS configuration of your domain by paying heed to the directions displayed on your screen.

Your next step would be to verify the domain ownership by clicking on the Verify option mentioned below the Add the CNAME option. Google will proceed to verify the specified CNAME record and in case there is no existing owner, will allow you to automatically become the owner of that domain including any sub-domains that you wish to create by adding specific names before your verified domain name.

Google might not always verify and inform you immediately about domain ownership, but will keep on scouring the internet at regular intervals as well as inform you about confirmed ownership once they locate the record. Google advises that you retain the record even when you have become a verified owner.

Anyway, you can still use other tools such as the Google Analytics tag, meta tag, or HTML file to verify domain ownership in case you cannot get DNS configuration access from your domain name provider. Webmaster Tools does offer an easy option to confirm your domain ownership and you can resort to other methods if this tool does not work for you.
