Google Provides Guidelines on Rich Snippets

Rich snippets help make life easier for Google bots as their algorithms can make quick decisions on the quality of the associated webpage. Since rich snippets have acquired a high level of importance in Google’s search criteria, the company has provided guidelines on how you can ensure a better search experience for their bots.

You need to firstly ensure that your structured data markup is correctly included on your website. There are several factors that need to be in order in your markup such as including up-to-date data, content that is relevant to the specific webpage, and is easy to locate on your webpage by visitors. This makes it easier for Google’s algorithms to display the rich snippet in their search results.

Google has provided helpful examples to illustrate the above point. For example, if your website is an online shopping site then you must ensure that reviews displayed on each page should be related to products displayed on that specific page and not about your online store.

Similarly, if your website is promoting a music band then you need to markup music concerts that are performed by that specific band instead of trying to promote related bands or even other bands performing in that same area.

On the other hand, Google has specified that its algorithms are trained to ignore rich snippets markups that are misleading, contain spam, or abusive and instead only render a text only snippet. The company has also reserved the right to intervene manually to disable rich snippets in case it observes actions that might affect user experience in a detrimental manner.

You can refer to Google’s Help Center if you have further queries on rich snippets. Using these tips will help you remain on the right side of Google’s algorithms and ensure that your webpages are seen in positive light during each search.
